Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a fairly common skin condition which can in some cases cause extreme distress to those with the condition - because of its unusual appearance. Vitiligo affects at least one in a hundred people in all countries throughout the world including the UK. Vitiligo affects people of both sexes equally, it also affects all races. Vitiligo can begin to develop at any age, although about half of the people with vitiligo have developed it before their mid twenties.
You cannot catch vitiligo from anyone with the condition as it is not infectious.
It is claimed that St-Tropez-Tanning can cover most vitiligo.
Most people that have vitiligo are not born with vitiligo, though some develop it very early in childhood. Some people carry it is their genes. That means you inherit DNA that has predisposed you to develop the skin condition. Recent UK studies have fully supported this theory, and there is extensive evidence from several larger studies around the globe that some vitiligo is inherited.
Patches of vitiligo skin have no natural skin pigment giving some protection against the sun's rays. This is because vitiligo skin is deficient in the melanocytes which produce the skin pigment (melanin) is not active. The effect of the sun's rays normally promotes melanin production and in turn turns the skin darker (brown); this is an effective (?) protective mechanism to prevent the skin from being damaged further by repeated burning.
The most important reason for protecting your vitiligo is to prevent sunburn. Not only is this painful, but also causes damage to the skin (including sunburn). Sunburn it would appear, can stimulate the spread of vitiligo in some people with the condition.
It is claimed that St-Tropez-Tanning can cover most vitiligo.
