Freckles are small sun-tanned spots of melanin on the surface of the skin of people usually with fair complexion.
The science bit: Having freckles is a genetic trait and is related to the presence of the melanocortin-1 receptor MC1R gene variant. Freckles are developed by the same process that produces a sun-tan, although the distribution of melanin is not the same across the entire skin's surface. Lighter skinned people and (especially) redheads are associated with an increased likelihood of being able to develop freckles. In dermatology, the synonym "ephelides" is used to designate freckles.
Freckles are predominantly seen on the face, although they may appear on any area of skin exposed to the sun's rays. Freckles are fairly rare on infants but common on children aged 5 to 15 and lessening into adulthood.
Many fair-skinned Europeans get freckles, but they disappear after a while. People of Black African decent are not likely to have freckles since their skin is not as prone to the affects of the sun. East Asians nationalities though, will get freckles and retain them for a long period of time.
Upon exposure to the sun, freckles will re-appear even if they have been altered with creams or laser treatment, but freckles do fade with age! Freckles are not a skin disorder. People with a predisposition to freckles may be especially susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer, and should therefore take extra care to protect themselves in the sun.
While many people (especially those that have them!) consider freckles unattractive, others find them appealing, and at the extreme can have a fetish for them. Hide freckles?
Freckle fetishists, who can be male or female, may also be fixated on freckling at particular locations of the body: shoulder-freckles, cheek-freckles, back-freckles, or other locations and combinations. Because freckles are closely genetically linked to red hair and surprisingly Irish derivation, freckle fetishism is in many cases related to (but not identical with) redhead fetishism and trichophilia.
